Cassandra Hays

How did you decide to go into the education field?

I come from a long line of educators. My great grandma taught in a one room school house and was secretly married to my great grandpa because, at the time, teachers weren't allowed to be married. My grandma was also a teacher. I have an aunt and an uncle who also spent time in education. My motivation is each student and trying to make an impact that will stick with them into adulthood.

How has school funding made a difference in your classroom?

School funding has been impactful in many ways. In special education it helped me purchase new curriculum that was appropriate for each student's needs. I also purchased new textbooks this year for my psychology and sociology classes.

What resources and supports can further benefit your classroom/school/community?

There are many resources and supports that could further benefit my community. This is a rich area that is full of potential and some of the kindest people. I think that they would benefit from more opportunities, varied class options, expanded tutoring programs, and varied club options for students who are not in sports.

Who/What inspires you? Why?

I am inspired every day to reach higher because of my children. They are my biggest motivator and a lot of the reason of why I want to get into advocacy. Education is the core of our future.

What accomplishment fills you with pride so far this year?

I am very proud to be a part of Advance Illinois. I have always wanted to get involved in advocacy and have never had the opportunity. I also changed my education career path this year and am very proud to say it is going amazing.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Never give up. Keep trying and know that no matter where your journey takes you there's always more options and roads you can take.

What is your favorite movie/book?

Elf, the Harry Potter series.  I enjoy reading books by Freida McFadden. I just recently finished “Yellowface” and that was a wonderful novel.
