John Giffin

How did you decide to go into the education field?

Early in my life, I had many outstanding teachers who were role models for me and who helped me become the person I am today. They made a difference in my life, and because of this, I wanted to do the same and become the best possible teacher and positive force in the lives of my students that I could be.

How has school funding made a difference in your classroom?

School funding helps bring our classrooms into the modern era by providing technology improvements, up-to-date and relevant curricula, and professional development so that teachers can provide the best experiences for students.

What resources and supports can further benefit your classroom/school/community?

We are currently expanding our wrap-around services to more fully meet the needs of students and families. This includes increasing our team-based support services and interventions as well as collaborations with families and our community.

Who/What inspires you? Why?

Our school's student support services staff is an extremely capable and caring group of individuals. They consistently provide a high level of support that focuses on students’ social and emotional well-being, and they are always there for our students.

What accomplishment fills you with pride so far this year?

By writing several grants, our school has been able to build its capacity in several areas, most notably by increasing programming and retaining several key staff members. We will also be able to hire a Director of Community Schooling to manage after-school and summer programs. This is a crucial position that will coordinate enrichment activities across a network of community schools, and coordinate family and community connections in the region.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Make friends with people who want the best for you.

What is your favorite movie/book?

One of my favorite books is “The Count of Monte Cristo". Although the novel has many themes, such as justice and redemption, the essential moral lesson is that revenge never solves the problem.
