Flor Carter

How did you decide to go into the education field?

Education has made a huge impact on my life, and I wanted to ensure that all students had the opportunity to pursue the path of their choice after high school.

How has school funding made a difference in your classroom?

School funding has made the difference in my building by allowing our students to have supports and resources that they may not otherwise have, such as SEL supports, access to summer school for credit recovery, and full-time truancy prevention support to increase student attendance and engagement.

What resources and supports can further benefit your classroom/school/community?

With the current teacher/school nurse/school social worker shortage, support teacher preparation programs and paid student teaching.

Who/What inspires you? Why?

My students inspire me every day. Many of them overcome challenges each day just to come to school. They are so determined and tenacious, yet the kindest, loving and compassionate people I know. I strive to be as giving and selfless as them.

What accomplishment fills you with pride so far this year?

This year I completed my first two triathlons. Last spring, I couldn't swim the length of the pool. Now, I can swim 1,000 meters in open water!

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

You can do hard things. I know that what you are going through now can often seem impossible, but with the help of others, planning and goal setting, you can get through anything.

What is your favorite movie/book?

One of my favorite books is "The Giver of Stars".
